OBITUARIES: ’65 GALS


Charlotte A. (Bethge) Meyer, 63, of Phoenix, born in Huntington Long Island, New York, passed away on January 21, 2010. She spent the first 12 years of her life in New York, moving with her family to Phoenix in 1960. She attended Camelback High, then the Univ. of Arizona.  In 1971 she married John L. Meyer, and was mother to two beautiful daughters. She worked as an operator at a phone company, finally retiring from the US Postal Service in 2006. When Charlotte entered a room, she did so with gusto and a huge smile. She was a warm, generous, loving person.  Survivors included her daughters, Erika Meyer and Jaime Murphy; brother, Peter Bethge; and sister, Carin Brauer. Kay Karol (Flynt) Alexander, 62, of Chandler, lost her long and courageous battle with cancer on June 12, 2009. She was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, to Milton and Tootsie Flynt. The family moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1952. In 1969 she married Larry Alexander, and together they raised a son and daughter in the Scottsdale/Paradise Valley area. Kay and her family moved to south Tempe in 1984 where she remained active in her children's schools and extra-curricular activities. After raising her children, Kay began a career in new home sales which she continued despite her 1995 diagnosis of breast cancer. For the next 13 ˝ years Kay underwent countless radiation and chemotherapy treatments which she endured so she could survive to see her children marry and give her (four) grandchildren. She selflessly gave her love and time to her friends and family, despite the many side effects of the cancer and her treatments. Patricia A. “Pat” (George) Widmer, 57, passed away September 5, 2005, at Garden City Hospital, Garden City, Michigan. Survivors included her husband of 42 years, Myles J. Pamela Sue (Kangas) Klemmer, 62, of Phoenix, passed away on September 9th, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born to Eugene and Geneva Kangas, Pam grew up in DeKalb, Illinois, and then moved with her family to Phoenix in 1960. Pam attended both Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University. After falling in love with John Klemmer and marrying in 1968, she helped put him through college and then started their family. She was a loving wife, enviable mother, and fiercely loyal friend. Karen Elaine (Keith) Karpinski, 56, passed away on February 23, 2003.  She was born in Phoenix. Karen's great grandparents homesteaded in Tucson and her grandparents homesteaded in the Casa Grade Valley.  Karen went to Longview grade school, Camelback High School and graduated with a Masters degree in Education from ASU.  She taught school in the Kyrene School District for 16 years.  Karen was a member of Grace Fellowship Bible Church.  Survivors included her children: Kevin, Christy and Suzanne; her sister, Frances; and a granddaughter, Stella.

 

Laura Lee (Lindvall) Jameson, 62, passed away June 17, 2010, after an 8 year battle with cancer.

 

Constance Sue “Connie” (Phillips) Winsor, 63, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on January 7, 2011. Connie was born in Phoenix. She grew up in the Valley, where she attended Squaw Peak Grade School and Camelback High School. She retired after 30 years of service from Mountain Bell/Qwest. Connie was preceded in death by her father, John Phillips. Survivors included her mother, Suzanne Phillips; life partner, Ruth Robison; son, John "Scot" Winsor; sister, Jenna (Phillips) Zander; and brother, Daniel. In lieu of flowers in Connie's memory, the family has set up an education fund for her only granddaughter, Savannah. Mary Jane Playman, 19, died along with Shirley Yada ’65 and Sandy Loeffler ‘67, younger sister of Tim Loeffler ‘65, on Saturday, March 12, 1966, at the age of 19, while coming home from the lake on Bee Line Highway.  Survivors included Mary Jane’s father, Donald; mother, Eunice; sisters, Ruth & Patricia; and brothers: Robert, John, Joe and Peter.  Mary Jane was a wonderful sister who will be missed by her family and friends. She was the middle child of seven.

 

Mary Lou Treadway, 57, passed away JuIy 13, 2004, in Glendale, Arizona, following a lengthy struggle with cancer.  Mary Lou worked for U.S. West Communications for 32 years.

 

Charlene Marie (Treat) Norris, 42, formerly of Phoenix, a teacher, died Oct 18, 1989. She was a graduate of Camelback High School. Survivors included her husband, Reverend Tim Norris; three daughters: Charla, Stephanie and Rachel; parents, Mr. & Mrs. W. B. Diane Lyn (Vacha) Perkins, 59, died of leukemia on December 17, 2006.  She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 31, 1947, and was last known to be living in Phoenix, Arizona.  Survivors included her husband, James Milton Perkins. (excerpted/ edited from The Arizona Republic, 12/20/2006)

 

Karen Stahr (Walker) Trefry, 63, passed away August 4, 2010.  She struggled many years with illness. Throughout her extraordinary life, she shared with all a deep love for children and family, much laughter, intense empathy, many opinions, and an incredibly quick wit.  Her greatest love was her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, whose grace & love brought her strength, peace and eternal life.  Survivors included ten grown children: Erin & Steve, Patrick, Benjamin, Glory, Angela, Adrianna, Joseph & Judy and Christina; a brother, Charlie; and a sister, Nancy.

 

Chong Sook  (Wilson) Moody, 71, of Phoenix, passed away November 14, 2008. She was born on October 27, 1937, in Korea, adopted by Mr. Stanley F. Wilson, and came to Phoenix in 1958. After graduating from Camelback High School and having a couple of years of college, she met and married Charles A. Moody. Survivors included her husband, Chuck; daughters: Alice Kaminsky and Angie King; and a sister, Young Soon Lee, of Seoul, Korea. Janet Lyn “Rusty” (Wolf) Biehl, 55,  passed away March 16, 2003.  Janet was a former resident of Phoenix.  Survivors included her husband, Dana Biehl; and daughters, Amy & Holly.

 

Edna Eileen (Young) Stidham, 44, of Phoenix, a sales account representative, died July 4, 1991. She was born in Missouri. Survivors included her sons Travis Bramam and Irl, Anthony and John Stidham; her parents; and three brothers.  (published in The Arizona Republic 9 July 1991)

Richard Michael Alexander, 49, a movie actor, died Jan. 1, 1997. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Survivors included his father, Robert; brother, Robert Jr.  (published in The Arizona Republic, 6 Jan 1997)

 

Steven Joseph Brooks, 52, of Phoenix, a retired manager for Walgreens, died August 27, 1999.  He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and was a Vietnam War Marine Corps veteran.  Survivors included his wife, Janet;  daughters, Tanya Marjorie and Jennifer Diane;  stepson, Gerald Michael Hultsch;  mother, Marjorie;  sister, Connie Spence;  brothers, Robert and Richard; and one grandchild.

 

Michael Joseph Cepello, 48, of Chandler, a crisis-center director, died Dec. 15, 1995. He was born in La Porte, Ind. Survivors included his wife, Cindy; son, Charley Vath; parents, Anthony Cepello and Lorraine and Jack Frost; sister, Jacquealen Allen; and brother, Steven.  (published in The Arizona Republic, 18 Dec 1995)

Frank Haller Erekson, 58, of Tempe, passed away November 13, 2005.  Survivors included his wife, Catherine Iliff.

 

Robert Clarence “Bob” Ewald, 22, a Lance Corporal in the US Marine Corps, died on June 18, 1968. Robert’s death was a non-hostile, ground casualty in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. His name is in row 19 of panel 56W of the Vietnam Memorial. He had been in Vietnam since February 20, 1968 and had been a Marine 2 years. Richard Kyto Haugen, 50, of Phoenix, a retired buyer for the Purchasing Department at St. Luke's Medical Center, died Nov 6, 1997. He was born in Duluth, Minn. and was a Vietnam War Navy veteran. John Howard Hughes, 23, a SGT in the US Army, 25th Infantry Division, died on June 9, 1969. John’s death was due to hostile ground action in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam. His name is in row 1 of panel 22W of the Vietnam Memorial. He had been in Vietnam since August 16, 1968 with length of service of 1 year. John was living in Phoenix, AZ, before enlisting in the Army. Charles Frederick "Bud" Johnson, Jr., 50, of Chandler, owner and operator of a sign-making business, died March 31, 1998, of a heart attack. He was born in Phoenix and was a Marine Corps veteran. He was also a member of the American Legion and Shrine Jesters. Survivors included his wife, Dana; daughter, Lisa; sons, Rick and Chris; father, Charles Johnson Sr.; sisters, Charlene Kniola and Cindy Toney.  (published in The Arizona Republic April 2, 1998)

 

Kenneth Michael "Kim" Kruglick, 57, passed away October 28, 2005, after a courageous 10 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Survivors included his wife, Lisa; sister Karen Murdock; and one brother, Dr. Lewis Kruglick. He was a criminal defense lawyer and a national expert and expert witness in forensics and DNA evidence. His main expertise was handling capital murder cases. He loved racing motorcycles, bungee cord jumping and was a pilot. (published in The Arizona Republic, Oct 30, 2005)

 

Robert James Ledbetter, 61, of Odessa, TX, died March 2, 2009.  Survivors include wife Celia Ledbetter of Odessa; sons Robert Ledbetter Jr. of Plano and Richard Hollingsworth of Odessa; daughters Peggy Hollingsworth of Odessa, Lisa Sessions of Midland and Julie Ledbetter of Galetta, Calif.; brothers John Ledbetter of Glendale, AZ, and Charles Ledbetter of Phoenix; and sisters Betty of Camp Verde, AZ, Shirley Fee of Scottsdale, AZ, and Barbara Randel of Phoenix.

Russell "Rusty" Lee Luther, 57, of Phoenix, passed away May 26, 2004. He was preceded in death by his mother Delfina. He was survived by his wife, Sharron "Penny"; daughters, Mary Sue & Victoria Cook; son, Sean Farrand; step daughter Xylina Corvelle; father, Frank; sisters, Margaret Ann Riddle & Sue Kosta; and brother, Richard. A second generation Arizonan, he graduated from Camelback High School and was a member of Sheet Metal Local #359 for 20 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing and baseball. John Charles "Charlie" MacDonald Jr, 62, of Tampa, FL, passed away, July 30, 2009. Survivors included his wife, Sandy MacDonald; and brother, Boyce Macdonald. Charlie was full of fun, life and love and will be greatly missed by those he touched. Charlie' s career spanned a life in property management and commercial real estate. William A. “Bill” McKay, Jr., 60, of Ridgecrest CA, passed away May 25, 2009. Born in Phoenix AZ, Bill was a graduate of Camelback High, and was a talented artist. He was preceded in death by parents William A and Edith McKay. Survivors included his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Michelle McKay of Burbank, CA; and sisters, Karen (Carl) Fiori of Buckeye and Colleen (Al) Colen of Phoenix. David Aaron Morand, 61, passed away on December 13, 2007, after a painful battle with cancer. With him were longtime friend and companion, Mike Gilstrap and cats, Willow and Salem. Dave was a strong spirit with a razor-sharp wit that never let anything get past him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Pete Kargas. Survivors included sisters Teresa & Rose Kargas and Amy Meadows; brother, Lon Morand; and many friends from his dedicated years at The Arizona Republic, who he stayed in touch with after his retirement.

 

Charles David Mosley, 50, of Phoenix, a food service technician, died March 24, 1998. He was born in Mullins, SC, and was a member of the Phoenix Jaycees. Survivors included his daughter, Jacque; parents, Elizabeth Oliver and Alvin Mosley; stepmother, Louise Oliver; stepfather, Richard L.; sister, Myra Sawyer; and brother, Willie. James “Jim” Paquin, MD, 62, of Yuma, AZ, passed away at home on March 25, 2010, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Phoenix. After graduating from Camelback High, Jim enlisted in the Navy and became a hospital corpsman during the Vietnam War. He later went on to graduate from ASU and then graduated from medical school at the University of Guadalajara, Facility of Medicine in 1977. This was followed by an internship at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, From there Jim completed his otolaryngolgology residency at the University of Arizona in 1982. Jim was an avid hunter and master scuba diver. He also loved cooking, wood working, snow skiing, flying, and traveling, but most of all loved the practice of medicine and helping patients from all walks of life. Jim loved his community and was the recipient is many awards and served on a multitude of boards. Jim was a founder of YRMC's Children's Rehabilitative Services and co-founder of it's Cleft Palate Team. He also served on Yuma County's Health Board, Yuma City Planning and Zoning Commission, Airport Authority Board, Hospice of Yuma Board, Yuma County Medical Society, and was a member of Riverfront Historical Society, a member of AWC's Foundation and a member of Range Riders.  Survivors included his loving wife, Jill Caporelli-Paquin; daughters, Marcela Mendenhall, MD, and Deanna Birky; mother, Alja Kelterborn; and brother Michael Paquin. Jim was preceded in death by his father, John Paquin.

 

Edward Hoyt Pinaire III, 19, born in Phoenix and a sophomore in the college of architecture at Arizona State University, was killed in an auto crash Nov. 17, 1966 on Curry Road near the Arizona State Sanatorium, Tempe.  He was an Eagle Scott and member of the Sunnyslope Chapter of De Molay. Survivors included his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Pinaire; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pinaire; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie C. Smith. Paul Henry Roozeboom, 64, passed away on March 23, 2011, at his home in Knoxville, Iowa.  He was born in Beech Grove, IN, the son of Albert and Martha Roozeboom. He attended Camelback High School in Phoenix, AZ, for several years before his family moved to Pleasantville, IA, where he graduated from high school.  Following high school, Paul worked on the construction crew that built the Red Rock Dam.  He later moved to California, then to Arizona, where he married Robin DeMoss VanBaale. Robin had two children, Michelle &  Amy, and together Paul and Robin had two sons, Tony & Ryan. In Arizona, Paul worked as an auto mechanic. In 1975 he returned to Knoxville and worked for Vermeer and Pella.  He was most recently employed as a welder for Weiler Industries of Knoxville. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed woodworking, photography and nature. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert. Survivors included his children: Tony Roozeboom, Ryan Roozeboom, Michelle Bishop and Amy Gutcher; his mother, Martha; his siblings: Katrina Veenstra & Shari Arkema of Pella, Andrea Rankin & Elaine Stanton of Knoxville, and Martha Paul of Des Moines.

 

Michael John Santilli, 38, passed away February 2, 1986 in San Francisco, CA.  Mike fell, hitting his head.  The ER sent him home where he later died.  He was born September 3, 1947.

 

Stephen David “Dave” Shadegg, 62, from Tucson, Arizona, died on October 15, 2009. He had survived cancer and a by-pass surgery, and was in Northern Arizona scouting elk with some friends when he died instantly from a massive heart attack.  Dave was born in 1947 in Phoenix, Arizona, to Stephen C. and Eugenia (Kehr) Shadegg.  Dave took immense joy in home building, Arizona history, politics, the great outdoors, and wood-working in his "Garage-Mahal".  Survivors included his wife of 35 years, Cindy Shadegg; his daughters: Camille Catsaros, Demetria Murray, and Katie Hicks; and his Camelback High siblings: Arizona Congressman John Shadegg ’67, Eugenia “Gege” (Shadegg) Johnson ’62 and Cynthia (Shadegg) Ackel ’60. Jerry Charles Wright, 47, of Phoenix, an electrician, died June 29, 1994. He was born in Phoenix and was a Vietnam War Army veteran.
